Thomas B. Felsberg
Bio:
Thomas Felsberg is the Founding Partner of Felsberg Advogados and a global reference in the area of insolvency and debt restructuring. Recognized by publications such as Latin Lawyer, Chambers and Partners, The Legal 500, and Leaders League as one of Brazil’s leading insolvency lawyers, Thomas was a member of the committees responsible for the drafting of the current Business Restructuring and Insolvency Law in Brazil. He is the first Latin American lawyer to receive the Global Restructuring Review’s Lifetime Achievement Award, for his work in restructuring and insolvency with respect to Brazilian and foreign companies, in June 2019.
Thomas’ recent experience includes advising: a Brazilian renewable energy company in its BRL 3.1 billion judicial restructuring, which included two recent successful M&A transactions; one of the largest sugar and ethanol groups in the country in its judicial restructuring with over BRL 2 billion in debts, which included financing that enabled an early exit from its judicial reorganization; the second largest creditor in the BRL 98 billion debt restructuring of a Brazilian construction conglomerate; several creditors in the recently completed BRL 60 billion restructuring by a Brazilian telecommunications company; and 15,000 debenture holders in the current insolvency proceeding of a Brazilian tollroad concessionaire.
Thomas is a member of: the American Bankruptcy Institute; the American College of Bankruptcy; the Advisory Board of the Brazilian Association of Infrastructure and Base Industries (ABDIB); INSOL International; the Brazilian Institute of the Institute for Restructuring Studies (IBR); the Legal Council, Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (FIESP); and the Board of the Columbia Global Center of Rio de Janeiro. He is also an Honorary Member of the Center for Law Firms Studies (CESA). In addition to being a Former Executive Committee Board member of the International Insolvency Institute, Thomas serves as the President of the Advisory Board of the Columbia University Club of Brazil and the President of the Advisory Board of TMA Brasil. Thomas holds an LL.M. from Columbia University and an LL.B. from USP - Universidade de São Paulo.
The author of an extensive list of books and articles in Portuguese and English, Thomas has actively participated as a speaker and panelist at congresses and conferences throughout the world.
