James Falconer is an attorney in Skadden’s Corporate Restructuring group based in London. He joined Skadden in 2011. James’ practice involves advising both debtors and creditors in relation to restructurings and other insolvency related matters, with an emphasis on matters involving cross-border issues. He is experienced in both contentious and non-contentious matters.

James has been involved in numerous high value restructuring deals, principally of European companies, both out-of-court and in-court, including in chapter 11 in the U.S. James was a senior member of the Skadden teams which advised Danish shipping company TORM A/S in relation to its $1.7bn out-of-court restructuring in 2012, and Greek shipping company Excel Maritime Carriers Limited in relation to its $970m restructuring in chapter 11 in 2013. He was closely involved in addressing the cross border aspects of the $3.8bn restructuring of U.S. company Travelport in 2011 (which was named as the “Out-of-Court Restructuring Deal of the Year (Over $1 Billion)” for 2013 by The M&A Advisor, the 2011 “Private Equity Deal of the Year” by The Deal and “Consumer Services Deal of the Year” at the 2012 International M&A Advisor Awards).

Prior to joining Skadden, James was a Senior Associate in the Banking, Restructuring and Insolvency group at Henry Davis York Lawyers, Sydney, Australia, where he acted primarily for secured creditors and insolvency practitioners. He was a principal member of the team advising the receivers and managers in relation to the $1bn receivership of childcare provider A.B.C. Learning Centres Limited. James commenced practice with Henry Davis York in 2007, having been clerk to the Hon. Justice John Perry, Supreme Court of South Australia in 2006.

James is a member of the Insolvency Lawyers Association and has served on its Associate Committee since 2013.

James completed his LLB with First Class Honours at the University of Adelaide, Australia in 2005 and received, amongst other awards, the Thompson Playford Prize and Medal as most outstanding graduate. He is admitted to practice in South Australia and England and Wales.
