Bio:

Lawyer, chartered economist and Court-appointed insolvency practitioner, José Carles is a founding partner at Spain-based CARLES | CUESTA (Chambers & Partners, top 100 law firm worldwide, GRR 100 for six consecutive years 2018-2023), where he leads the cross-border business recovery, restructuring and insolvency practice and has worked on Spain's most relevant restructuring and insolvency files. Prior to CARLES CUESTA, he worked at UBS Investment Bank (London) and Garrigues Restructuring and Insolvency team (Madrid).

INSOL Fellow, Mr. Carles completed the Global Insolvency Practice Course of INSOL International 2019/2021 with honours. Master in Company Law from Centro de Estudios Garrigues and Harvard Law School, BA in Law (ICADE) and BSc in Business Administration (ICADE). 

University Professor. After the implemententation of the EU Directive on Preventive Restructuring Frameworks in Spain, José introduced  Madrid’s Bar association (ICAM) Business Restructuring Master program, which he directs and in which he lectures on :

• strategy related to restructuring procedures,
• restructuring plans,
• international insolvency (European Insolvency Regulation, EU Directives, UNCITRAL Model Laws, Spanish rules of Private International Law towards recognition through an exequatur proceeding) and
• cryptoassets under insolvency, insolvency of cryptoexchanges and cryptocurrency lending companies

José is a professor in restructuring and insolvency law at ICADE’s LLM program and at Universidad CEU San Pablo. He is regularly invited as a speaker by international institutions (including the World Bank or the American Bankruptcy Institute) and universities and professional organizations worldwide (USA, Canada, Mexico, India, Egypt, France, Germany, UK, Ireland, The Netherlands, etc.).

He is joint Editor-In-Chief of INSOL Europe’s insolvency journal Eurofenix and member of the Editorial Board of INSOL World (INSOL International). He has written over 50 publications on Restructuring & Insolvency Law for international books, journals and magazines.

Professional memberships. José is among the founding members of the Spanish Club of Insolvency Law (CEDI) and is an active member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, INSOL International and the International Insolvency Institute. He is a member of the Council at INSOL Europe, country coordinator for Spain and co-chair of INSOL Europe’s legal tech & digital assets wing.

He is also one of the six members of the advisory committee to the insolvency wing of Madrid’s Bar Association and is a member of the Association of Chartered Economists in Madrid. He is registered as an insolvency practitioner at Madrid's Bar Association, Barcelona's Bar Association and the Balearic Islands Bar Association.
